Great Waters Brewing Company, the brewpub right around the corner from the Palace Theater in St. Paul, officially closed its doors November 18. When Sean O’Byrne opened Great Waters in 1997, the brewpub scene in Minnesota was “pretty slim,” according to the Star Tribune. Now, there are more than 150 craft breweries in the state.  O’Byrne said he doesn’t have immediate plans, but the site will be undergoing major renovations for a new concept.

6Smith owner Randy Stanley’s
latest concept, a large steakhouse named Baldamar, is scheduled on open in the fall of 2019 in the newly revamped and upgraded Rosedale Center. Shea is the designer on the project.

Vulcan’s newest product, the Versatile Chef Station, was awarded the 2018 StarChefs International Chefs Congress Innovator Award for Heavy Equipment. The VCS has the ability to sear, braise, simmer, steam, boil, shallow fry, sauté and retherm, all in one small-footprint, multi-function cooking station. The Innovator Awards recognize kitchen equipment at the vanguard of product development, according to a release.

Manitowoc, Wisconsin-based Lakeside Foods won Sysco’s Gold Supplier Excellence Award in the frozen/canned fruit and vegetable category at the foodservice giant’s supplier recognition event in Houston in November. Sysco annually recognizes suppliers who meet or exceed its exacting standards and demonstrate a spirit of partnership and innovation. Criteria for the awards include sales, margin/case growth and quality assurance, as well as subjective factors like customer insights, sales support, category management and execution.

Duck Donuts, the decorate-it-yourself donut chain based in North Carolina, has chosen Woodbury for its first Minnesota location. The difference in this donut concept from the others is that customers choose what toppings they want on their donut, much like fast-casual, gourmet pizza chains did for pizza. The donuts are fried to order, so they’re always a hot commodity, then decorated.
