Restaurant Openings




Guavas Cuban Cafe has taken over Xavi’s former spot at 5605 Chicago Avenue in South Minneapolis with plans to be open by the end of this year. Mpls./St. Paul Magazine reported that Frank Machado of Twin Cities Paella is behind the new restaurant. The menu will include Cuban dishes like ropa vieja, picadillo, empanadas and pastelitos.

 

A new Filipino restaurant, Apoy, opened at 4301 Nicollet in South Minneapolis, serving unusual dishes like Sisig (pork belly, cheeks and ears and chicken liver) and Sarciadong Isda (the catch of the day with scrambled eggs). Hours are 4 to 10 p.m. weekdays and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and reservations aren’t accepted. Apoy means “fire” in Tagalog, the main dialect of the Philippines. 

 

Chef/Owner Alex Dayton is rolling in dough with his new sophisticated menu for Wayzata’s The Dough Room that serves both pizzas and pasta. The new eatery is located at 300 Superior Blvd.

 

The greatly anticipated opening of Daniel del Prado’s second restaurant is now a reality. Following closely behind the popular Martina, Colita, a Tex-Oaxacan restaurant, is in the Armatage neighborhood of Minneapolis. Marco Zappia has developed the bar program, which celebrates fermentation in exotic concoctions. 

 

Check out a number of new restaurants transforming Rosedale Center’s outdated food court into a two-level food hall with fresh, trendy concepts curated by Craveable Hospitality Group. Among the offerings are Angry Taco, Handwich Shop (palm-sized sandwiches), Saltbrick Burger (hamburgers cooked on pink Himalayan salt bricks) and PieCaken Bakeshop, which is the turducken of the dessert world. 

Celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern opened Lucky Cricket, a Chinese eatery featuring a mix of Chinese cuisines from Cantonese to Szechuan to Fujianese, in November at the Shops of West End in St. Louis Park. 

 

Punch Pizza is opening a location in Roseville, across from the newly revamped Rosedale Center. The Neapolitan pizza chain has 11 locations.
