Coffee Talk: Congrats to Beard Winner Ann Kim
CONGRATULATIONS to Ann Kim who won the coveted national prize as the 2019 James Beard Awards’ Best Chef: Midwest. This was the second time she was nomination in this category. Along with her husband and partner Conrad Leifur, Kim owns Pizza Lola, Hello Pizza, Young Joni and an upcoming taco restaurant. Also up for the award from the Twin Cities were Jamie Malone of Grand Café and Eastside and Christina Nguyen of Hai Hai and Hola Aprepa. The awards were presented in Chicago on May 6. All three chefs and restaurant owners were also Charlie Awards winners.
Local James Beard media award winners were Steve Hoffman for distinguished writing for his article in Artful Living magazine, “What Is Northern Food?” and Nick Fauchald, Alex Day and David Kaplan for Book of the Year: Cocktail Codex: Fundamentals, Formulas, Evolutions.
Baker Rachel Swan and Karen “Ratchet” Mattison have found a storefront for their popular pies. Pie & Mighty is giving up its borrowed space in a church basement kitchen for a new brick-and-mortar location at 3551 Chicago Avenue South in Minneapolis. The duo launched a “kick-fund-a-gogo FUN-raiser in early May to help cover the costs. Check out their Facebook page for more info.
Brian Slipka has been named Sunbelt Business Advisor’s chairman and CEO. Slipka most recently served as senior executive officer of TCF Technology Finance and formerly as chief revenue officer of Winthrop Resources, a TCF subsidiary. Minneapolis-based Sunbelt Business Advisors is part of the Sunbelt Network, an organization of business brokers and main street mergers-and-acquisitions professionals. Chris Jones will continue to serve as day-to-day leader and president. “There is an enormous market opportunity emerging for Sunbelt,” said Slipka. “Nationally over the next decade, a staggering $10 trillion in small, mid-sized, and franchise business value will transition, fueled in part by the sale of 12 million baby-boomer-owned businesses.” Sunbelt Midwest is based in Minneapolis.
