News: Circus Comes To Town
Upstairs Circus brings new meaning to the phrase “craft cocktail.” They just might be serving the most expensive cocktail in the North Loop, but that’s because it comes with do-it-yourself luggage tags, a string-art picture or any other number of art projects you work on while you sip. The Circus started in Denver—the Lodo Denver neighborhood is similar to the North Loop neighborhood—and opened here in early August (125 N. Washington, in front of SexWorld). The concept is similar to group painting sessions, such as Painting with a Twist, where people are encouraged to bring their own wine, while an instructor takes them through the process of painting a picture. At Upstairs Circus, however, there’s a full bar and a limited menu of snack foods. A flatbread pizza, which was on the menu, is still in the works. The proprietor suggested we bring our own food in, pointing across the street to Red Rabbit, where he says a lot of people have been ordering food. Our bill for two soft drinks and two craft projects was around $77, without tip. Happy hour prices take $10 off the project and offers drink specials. It opens at 3 p.m. weekdays and is opened until 12 a.m. Friday and Saturdays. Reservations are recommended.
Closings: Rustica Cookies & Creamery is no longer in the Mall of America; Victory 44, the gastropub and coffee bar located in a converted gas station on N. 44th Avenue in Minneapolis, has closed; Haute Dish on Washington is no longer serving its clever comfort food, including a picnic in a salad (what’s going to happen to that great portrait in the reception area?); Upton 43 and its Dirty Bird take-out closed its current location, but is negotiating for a spot in the North Loop.
