Spotlight on Charlies' Rising Stars

Shannel Winkel proved why she’s a finalist for the Charlie Awards’ Rising Star during her interview with Kare 11 reporter, Laura Betker in late December. She masterfully cooked, while giving the scoop on the upcoming Charlie Awards on January 27 at the Pantages Theater in Minneapolis. The poised executive chef at The Bird in Loring Park has a bachelor’s degree in health science and nutrition from the University of Iowa and training from the Le Cordon Bleu in the Twin Cities. After culinary school, she went on to hone her craft working for James Beard award-winning Chef Paul Berglund at Bachelor Farmer in Minneapolis’ North Loop.

In 2017, Winkel was awarded a scholarship from the James Beard Foundation for Women in the Culinary Leadership Program, where she apprenticed with legendary Miami Chef Cindy Hutson, and assisted Top Chef’s season 13 winner, Jeremy Ford, in opening his South Beach restaurant, Stubborn Seed.

Winkel is one of three candidates vying for the honor of being the 2019 Rising Star. While you’ll find her write-up in the online version of the coverage on the finalists, she was inadvertently left out of the print version.

The definition of a Rising Star is: “An under-30, up-and-coming foodservice professional whose talent and hard work guarantees he or she will make their mark on the Twin Cities community and go on to even greater contributions.”

Her fellow finalists are Rikki Giambruno, chef/owner of Hyacinth in St. Paul, and Joshua Walbolt, chef de cuisine at Lat14 in Golden Valley.

The Charlies will hit the stage at the Pantages Theater on Sunday, January 27, starting at 3:30 p.m. In addition to cheering on the Charlie finalists, prepare to be entertained by a live band and great female singer, comedy sketches and videos. Immediately following the ceremony honoring foodservice professionals in 14 categories is the Charlies’ Afterparty at Seven Steakhouse and Sushi, next door to the theater.

Tickets are just $30 for both the show and Afterparty. They can be purchased at @charliesexceptionale.com by calling 612-767-3229 or emailing info@charliesexceptionale.com. Tickets can also be purchased from the Hennepin Theater Trust box office at 805 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis.
