Chef Sarah Master Plans Resort Restaurant



Chef Sarah Master is leaving Barbette to open Mr. Roberts Resort.

Sarah Master is taking her cooking talents north to open her own restaurant and resort.

With co-owner Dan Beckwith, the former Barbette executive chef returns to her native Iron Range town of Pengilly to launch Mr. Roberts Resort on the shores of Swan Lake. Master plans to bring modern Midwestern cuisine to the 90-seat, supper club-style restaurant and bar with a dishes such as macaroni and cheese-stuff meatloaf, smelt fries, venison stroganoff, and a lamb bacon BLT, plus specialties made using her own on-site brick smokehouse.

The resort, set to open June 1, is a combination of cabins and RV sites set among the north woods pines. The restaurant also includes banquet space for weddings, receptions, and other events, and outdoor seating is in the works.

“This has been a dream of mine for a very long time,” said Master, who before returning to Barbette ran the kitchen at downtown Minneapolis’ Hotel Ivy and worked at several James Beard-winning restaurants. “I’ve always wanted a place to showcase the food I grew up eating in a more modern style. The backdrop of the lake and the wilderness is just bonus for my cooking.”

Master credited her time at Barbette, one of restaurateur Kim Bartmann’s eateries, with helping her hone her craft as she constantly developed new menus and served what she called an “adventurous clientele.” Beckwith, too, is connected to Bartmann, serving as the financial controller for her restaurants since 2010.
